MANAGING ENERGY NOT TIME
“creative mornings. routine afternoons. match the energy.”
The Lesson
You still have to manage time, but think in terms of energy instead. The levers: (1) Time of day. Creative work in the morning, routine work in the afternoon. By afternoon you can't create, but you can execute. (2) Physical position. Sit upright, feet flat on floor, and your brain follows. Couch with laptop? You'll be asleep in 5 minutes. (3) Diet. Simple carbs for lunch equals sleepy afternoon. Experiment and track. (4) Introvert/extrovert. Know what recharges you. (5) Lighting. Blackout for sleep, bright for work. (6) Environment. Depressing space equals depressed energy. (7) Focus. Protect morning hours from distractions. (8) Oxytocin. Physical contact with loved ones creates contentment.
Real-World Example
A founder wonders why they can't write investor updates. They're trying at 4pm after a burrito lunch while slouched on the couch. Fix: Write at 6am (energy peak), protein breakfast (no crash), desk with feet flat (posture triggers productivity), phone in another room (no interruption). Same task, different energy management. The update writes itself.
