MOTIVATING EMPLOYEES
“help them grow. add one energizer. tell them everything.”
The Lesson
Employee motivation has systematic levers. (1) Support talent stack building. People who are learning feel like they're going somewhere. If they're stagnating, they're unhappy. Encourage learning even if it's not directly job-related. (2) Engineer the personality mix. You need the right talents, but also the right personalities. One funny, energetic person can light up a whole team. If everyone is quiet and serious, consider hiring for energy. (3) Keep the team super-informed. Tell them everything you can. Information creates inclusion. People who feel in the loop feel ownership. These three levers (growth, energy, information) compound into a motivated team.
Real-World Example
A founder notices team energy is low. Check the levers: Are people learning, or just executing? (Sponsor some courses, encourage side projects.) Is there at least one energizer on the team? (If not, hire for personality next time.) Does the team know what's happening with the company? (Start a weekly all-hands with real information.) Motivation isn't about perks. It's about growth, energy, and inclusion.
