ASKING FOR WHAT YOU WANT
“you should have asked. that's the lesson.”
The Lesson
One of the rules of persuasion: if you don't ask directly for what you want, you have much less chance of getting it. The lesson came from a college story. Years of having a crush on someone, never asking because it seemed out of reach. On the last day, finally asked. Her response: 'You should have asked.' That changed everything. From that day forward, whenever something seems out of reach, ask anyway. You would be amazed how often asking for something you don't think you could get works out fine.
Real-World Example
A founder wants an introduction to a famous investor. Wrong approach: assume they're too important, don't ask. Right approach: ask anyway. 'Hey, any chance you could introduce me to X?' The worst answer is no, which is where you already are. The best answer changes everything. Most people never ask because they've already decided the answer is no. Don't decide for them.
