TELLING A STORY

prepare it. it must be natural. quick setup. answer objections early.

The Lesson

Storytelling is technique plus practice. Have the story fully formed in your head before telling it. Practice until it flows. Spot natural stories, ones that are inherently interesting, funny, or fascinating. If it doesn't move YOU, it won't move others. Don't try to make a boring thing into a story. Keep the setup quick. Don't give lots of background before the interesting part. Anticipate objections and questions exactly when they arise in the listener's mind, then answer them immediately.

Real-World Example

A founder pitching their startup practices the story until it's fully formed. They identify the natural story: the moment they realized the problem existed. They keep setup to one sentence, then get to the interesting part. When they mention their unconventional approach, they immediately address the objection: 'You might think this can't scale, but here's why it does.' The pitch flows because objections are answered before they can form.
