IDENTIFYING WINNERS VERSUS LOSERS
“winners believe they control outcomes. it works better. truth is irrelevant.”
The Lesson
The easiest way to identify a winner: do they believe they control their own destiny, or do they see themselves as a victim? Which one more accurately describes reality? Doesn't matter. One of these isn't right. It's just that one works better. The control mindset consistently produces better results than the victim mindset. It causes you to learn how you affect others, to take ownership of outcomes, and to improve. When hiring or getting into relationships, look for this belief. You want people who think their actions determine their results.
Real-World Example
A founder is hiring a key role. Two candidates with similar skills. In the interview, Candidate A explains past failures as external: 'The market shifted, my manager didn't support me, timing was wrong.' Candidate B explains failures as learning: 'I didn't understand the customer well enough, I communicated poorly with my team, I moved too slowly.' Same history, different filter. Candidate B gets hired. Their control mindset predicts they'll actually improve.
