THE RULE OF TWELVE FOR BUILDING A TALENT STACK
“12 concepts gets you 80%. foundation + sub-skills = rare.”
The Lesson
You can get 80% understanding of almost any field by learning about 12 key concepts. Start with a foundational skill where you're close to 100%. Then add related 80% skills rapidly. A pilot who adds aerobatic concepts becomes a safer pilot without competing in air shows. A pianist who learns 12 concepts of guitar, violin, and drums gains a wider understanding of music. The power is in the combination: foundation plus multiple 80% sub-skills equals rare capabilities that almost nobody has.
Real-World Example
A founder is a strong engineer (foundational skill). Instead of going deeper into engineering, they spend a month learning the 12 key concepts of sales, another month on the 12 concepts of marketing, another on finance. They're not experts in any of these. But they're an engineer who can sell, market, and read a balance sheet. That combination is rarer and more valuable than being a slightly better engineer.
