Persuasion

PERSUASION VOICE

matter of fact. no uptalk. no pleading. no attitude. truth needs no help.

The Lesson

The most persuasive voice sounds like your truth needs no help. Avoid: (1) Uptalk. Ending statements like questions makes you sound uncertain. (2) Bleating/pleading. The begging tone implies weak arguments. (3) Raising your voice. Suggests you can't win on logic. (4) Attitude/cockiness. Triggers resistance. (5) Sternness. Implies you need force. Instead: matter-of-fact delivery. Varied but not dramatic. You can use questions strategically. Let people talk themselves out of their position. The key: speak as if what you're saying is obviously correct and needs no extra selling. That confidence slides past defenses.

Real-World Example

A founder pitches investors. Wrong: 'We think this could maybe be a really big market?' (uptalk). Wrong: 'You have to understand how important this is!' (raising voice). Wrong: 'Obviously anyone can see this is the future' (attitude). Right: 'The market is $50B. We have 10% month-over-month growth. Here's how we get to $100M.' Matter of fact. Truth needs no help.
