WHERE TO LOOK DURING EYE CONTACT
“far: whole face. middle: triangle. close: one eye. soft focus.”
The Lesson
Where exactly to look during eye contact depends on distance. Across the room: their head is tennis-ball sized, just look at the whole thing. Conversational distance: do a slow triangle-eye to eye to mouth and back. They can't tell you're moving. Very close (intimate): one eye will be dominant, look at that one. Key principle: soft focus. You're giving attention, not examining them. Never look past them. They can always tell. Let your eyes travel naturally instead of drilling into one spot.
Real-World Example
A founder felt awkward during one-on-ones-where to look? They learn the triangle technique. During their next meeting, they naturally move eye-eye-mouth while listening. It feels less intense for both people. The conversation flows better. When shaking hands at the end, they look at the grip first, then eyes. The whole interaction feels more natural because they stopped overthinking it.
